Debunking the Root Canal Myth
Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation for being painful. In reality, modern root canal procedures are comfortable and can save your natural tooth.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal treats the soft tissue inside your tooth (the pulp) when it becomes infected or inflamed. The procedure removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, then seals the space.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- Severe toothache, especially when chewing
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
- A recurring pimple on the gums
The Procedure
Modern root canal treatment is typically completed in one or two visits. With proper anesthesia, you should feel little to no discomfort during the procedure.
Aftercare
After a root canal, your tooth may be sensitive for a few days. A crown is usually recommended to protect the treated tooth and restore full function.
